Why apply for an internship?

Our global economy has seen better days, and it’s no surprise that unemployment numbers are soaring all across the globe. Professionals with years of experience are competing for jobs along side with recently graduated students. Swimming in the unemployment pool with such competition doesn’t bode well for those with little or no work placements on their resume. Educational excellence is very important on your CV, but don’t underestimate the importance of work experience and internships.

Employers benefit from this downward economy because they can choose the cream of the crop to fill their staff. One problem that many new grads face is that as eager as they are, they lack the necessary skills needed to excel in the workplace. Many employers also agree that university grads with little to no work experience lack the level of professionalism that only comes from working in the real world. This puts many students between a rock and a hard place. How do you get work experience if no one will hire you because you don’t have any work experience? This is why internships have become more important than ever.

Enhance your skills & build your CV

By completing an internship, you are exposed to an experience that will enhance your skill set. You will learn time management, discipline, teamwork, and professionalism. Some work placements are actual paying jobs and can help compensate for rising university costs, while others can count for university credits. It is also a great way to get your foot in the door within the industry. Networking with colleagues and participating in an office mentorship certainly won’t hurt your chances of finding a job once your internship ends.

Stand out

However, internships typically aren’t handed out to just anyone. You have to take the time to research a company that is hiring and discover what they are looking for in a potential intern. Design your resume so you stand out in a stack of papers, or participate in a work-study program through your school. No matter which route you take, make sure that you invest some time and energy into the search.

Don’t get discouraged if you are a fresh graduate and weren’t able to take any time to complete an internship. The majority of interns today are actually recent graduates that are looking for some experience to add to their resume. Most internships accept students up to a year after they graduate university.

The benefits of interning are basically endless

I started out my career as a design intern at the Walt Disney Company. I interned there for two separate internships while in college and after I graduated, I was able to use my contacts and connections I had made during my time there to land a permanent position. I was able to work in my field of study and learn first had from a professional company, all while making connections and contacts for future employment.

It may take a while for the economy to turn around again, so take this time to build your resume and network with your peers and mentors. Interning, whether paid or not, is the best investment you can make for your future.
