A memorable aspect of any event is the design. Lighting, fabrics, and décor all contribute to the overall look and feel of the space and the common element amongst everything is colour. Below are some tips of how you can incorporate colour in some expected and unexpected places.

1. Walls

Now typically, you can’t go into a banquet hall or rented space and start painting the walls, you definitely won’t get your deposit back from that. However, by choosing a colour scheme before you book your venue you can keep your colours in mind when looking at different locations. If oranges and browns are your colours, consider booking your event in a room with large windows so that the outside fall foliage can be showcased. Another way to bring colour in is to use lighting on the walls. A room can be completely transformed by just the flip of a switch.

2. Chairs

Most event venues have standard chairs they use for their dining services. Consider making slipcovers in an accent colour to help make your tables pop. Better yet, consider incorporating a bold and graphic pattern on the slipcovers so your room will display an aura of modern whimsy. Also consider mixing and matching different chair styles. Rent several different styles but make sure they are all the same colour. These different styles will add a level of texture to your tables and will be united around the room with their common colour motif.

3. Food

Now you don’t have to inject blue food colouring in your mashed potatoes, but consider arranging your menu with colourful food that fits your design scheme. Dessert is the most lenient course that you can alter to fit your colours. Talk with the chef or catering company and see what food options they can come up with that will match your décor. Don’t stop at the food, make sure to talk with the bartender and set up a signature drink that will showcase your colours. Plates and cutlery are other great ways to incorporate your colours into the buffet line.

4. Attire

Weddings are the most popular event that incorporate colours into clothing. Brides spend hours picking out the right white dress and the perfect colour bridesmaids attire.  Adding a ribbon of colour on a dress or a bright accent tie are common ways that you can dress up the space—pun intended. Consider having your guests dress up. In your invitation, ask that they wear a certain colour. It is always fun to see everyone unified by the same colour and will also help make your space cohesive.
In a world full of bland and usual events, there is always room for a pop of colour. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and ask your guests to wear a shade of purple or serve an array of blueberry desserts. A colourful world is a fun world, and your event should be no different.
