Sometimes great venues in London can be the most unexpected places - in this case inside a bookshop. Waterstones Piccadilly is a gem, right in the heart of London, which organise a variety of events for the public to enjoy, like talks in their private rooms [at the very top of the venue] and cookery demonstrations in the open kitchen [in the basement].

It is certainly a place worth keeping an eye on, if you like the idea of escaping for an hour and learning about something completely different. They also manage to book a range of high-profile authors.

Events don’t cost very much (approx £5 and cheaper if you have a Waterstones card), sometimes even free, although understandably you usually end up buying the book afterwards - so you should probably account for that.

Sue Johnston and Richard Wilson at Waterstones Piccadilly

Sep 02, 2011 by Michael from eventjuice

Last night we attended Sue Johnston's first launch event for her book 'Things I couldn't Tell My Mother', where she was interviewed by Richard Wilson (which was a nice surprise) - we couldn't believe it! (Sorry bad joke)

It was a very interesting and fun hour learning about someone else's life, and they were both so lovely. All four of us had a brilliant time at the event.

Anyway, I'm detracting from the point of this review which is Waterstones Piccadilly - not the actual event.

The event took place at the very top of the building, which is where you line up and pick up tickets. You can't pick them up from any of the counters, so don't make the mistake of lining up like I did.

The bookshop, events team and catering are separate organisations, which is probably why you can't pay for your tickets at the shop counters. This also means visitors are not allowed beverages inside the room during the talk (or at least we weren't for the Sue Johnston talk), which was a bit of a shame that would have been nice, but not the end of the world.

There is a coffee shop/bar/restaurant on the fifth floor so a good meeting place and place to have a drink afterwards.

The cookery demonstrations take place in the basement, and there is a coffee shop down there where people can meet.
